Elephants should be regarded as part of India's national heritage, claims the country's environment minister. Jairam Ramesh believes that the move to make the animal a key part of the country's heritage could play an important role in ensuring the long-term survival of the species.
"We will soon declare elephant as a national heritage animal as they have been part of our heritage since ages [for a long time]. We need to give same [the] degree of importance to [the] elephant as is given to [the] tiger in order to protect the big animal," explained the minister.
It is also expected that the Wildlife Protection Act will be updated to ensure the creation of a National Elephants Conservation Authority during the winter session of parliament.
