'Right pills at right time' should stave off malaria

Those heading off on cheap flights to India should find that by taking the right kind of drug for the recommended time keeps them safe from developing malaria.

Commenting after pop star and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole fell seriously ill after contracting the disease on a recent trip to Tanzania, professor David Hill, director of the National Travel Health Network and Centre, said: "Most often if you avoid those mosquito bites and take all the pills you are not going to get it."

He went on to say that out of the 1,500 people diagnosed with malaria each year in the UK, most cases are of individuals who have either taken the wrong type of drug or not taken any medication at all.
