The airport has undertaken a massive project to increase its already expansive retail zone by another 150% - something that is sure to impress international holiday makers taking flights to India and landing up in the city.

In addition, the airport has allocated an additional 5,000 square feet for the setting up of multi-cuisine restaurants. Hyderabad Airport Expects Lower Passenger Traffic This Year
Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has something to celebrate but much to worry as the airport registered one of the India’s fastest growing passenger traffic in the year 2011-12. However, the airport foresees sluggish growth in the current fiscal year.
A 16 percent growth is achieved by the airport for the previous year, however things doesn’t look too rosy currently, due to the issues faced by the Indian aviation industry.
In 2011-12, airport handled 8.6 million passengers. This figure includes 1.9 million international passengers who took flights to India to land up in Hyderabad. Rajiv Gandhi International was the second airport after Delhi to register the fastest growth in terms of passenger traffic. The growth can be attributed to the fact that apart from being a popular business hub, Hyderabad is also a top holiday spot that attracts lot international leisure travel buffs who look for cheap flights to India.
However, with challenges in the Indian aviation sector, this year things may not be as pretty as the previous year, something articulated by the GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), the company operating the airport.
The company says it will be a “challenge” to sustain the growth in the current financial year. However, GHIAL clarified that it is not expecting negative growth either as demand will continue to grow.
While addressing the issue of not much growth in the international passenger traffic in 2011-12, the company’s CEO said the blame lies with the capacity problem. He has expressed hope that several airlines would launch new international flights in this year.
Turkish Airlines is said to be keen to start operations on the Hyderabad-Istanbul route.
